Shadow Trip

Discovering “trail magic” on the AT

On my latest “shadow trip” for the June 27th Buzzard Hill Hike (still some spots left!), my route intersected with the Appalachian Trail. Little did I know, I had specifically crossed the 1,000 mile marker for thru-hikers headed north!

What I figured would be a quiet morning with my dog turned into a 30-minute hang with folks who'd turned up to create Trail Magic, spontaneous acts of generosity for thru-hikers. A little rest, some healthy snacks, water and electrolytes, and a bit of conversation to encourage folks to continue on.

Two hikers that stood out: a father and son who began their journey in April 9th and will make it to Maine by September. I was amazed not just by their stamina and fortitude, but by the trust they must have shared to spend a full 5 months walking the length of the country together.

It was a serendipitous reminder that Father’s Day is this Sunday.

Local Meet-Up

Next Summer Friday moved to Bethesda

Heads up: we've moved our June 26th meet-up to Bethesda Row. Catboat Pizza Bar didn't pan out, unfortunately, but the ride out from Georgetown Waterfront along the Capital Crescent to Bethesda is a beautiful one. We’ll meet in Bethesda at 6:30, and in Georgetown at 5:30.
